Meditation:
Joshua 1:7-9
Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

What is meditation?
By dictionary meditation is a contemplative discourse. Meditation is contemplation. It means considering with attention; it means giving continued attention to a particular subject; it means to muse; it means to study.

When meditation is mentioned in the Bible, it speaks of musing.
To muse bears two meanings: The first is to become lost in thought, to ponder. The second is to say with due consideration or thought.

From the onset, the terms in the Scriptures (suach, hagah, siyach) transliterated to meditation bear two meanings in common; to muse, and to speak. They mean to commune, to complain, to ponder, to sing.

So, to meditate is to muse.
Did you know that ‘music’ comes from ‘muse’? but that’s for another day.

Behold what God tells Joshua:
(Vs 7) First He gives him a word. ‘Be strong and very courageous. Observe the Word I have relayed to you, even through your leader. Do this Word. Stick to Jesus. And you will prosper your way.’
(Vs 8) Then He tells him how to abide in Him:- ‘Don’t stop speaking but muse (think and say) on the Word/Me all the time. So that you know to do the Word. Because your excellence and success depend on it.’
(Vs 9) And in case you’ve forgotten what specifically to get lost in thought about, let Me repeat, “Be strong and of a good courage.” And here’s the one reason why you should not be afraid or dismayed – I Am with you no matter where you go!’
(Of course I’ve paraphrased Joshua 1:7-9 relevantly)

In conclusion, complete meditation involves thought and speech. Sitting there quietly thinking is only half the job, only declaring mantras is also half the job.
You are to read God’s Word to you, then extract it to think and speak it into you, your day, your life, your family, your… And absorb that Word into your life; then application closely follows meditation; and then you make your way prosperous, and you succeed.

  1. Nothing beats hiding God’s word in our hearts. It literally starts to play Into every aspect of our lives because we know then that God is sovereign, He is in control and His will will be done. For we are vessel and He the Potter; He uses us however He pleases. Thank you for such beautiful insight 🙏
