Day 7: My Five Favorite Songs

Day 7: My Five Favorite Songs

When I saw today’s prompt, my first thought was: Huh!?
How in the world am I supposed to pick just a measly five songs out of the millions I’ve heard, loved, and lived through?

I love music. Truly. This might sound a little cliché, but music is the heartbeat I feel in my soul. (Okay, fine, I admit it, that was very cliché.) But still, it’s true. Music has been there for every version of me: the hopeful one, the heartbroken one, the carefree one, the one trying to figure life out one song at a time.

So, put simply, I can’t pick a favourite song, let alone five. But sigh… I can’t pass on this day either. So instead of choosing favorites, I’ll share a few songs that have significant memories attached to them. Songs that feel like bookmarks in my life.

1. “Thank God I Found You” – Mariah Carey ft. 98 Degrees
The first time I heard this song—sometime around 2001—I was maybe 8 or 9 and had my very first crush. You know how the tale goes: girl sees boy, girl crushes on boy, girl listens to song on repeat and mentally dedicates it to boy. The end.
Pure, innocent, slightly dramatic young love at its finest.

2. “One Sweet Day” – Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men
This one is a no-brainer. After the death of my mother in 2004, I played this song over and over again. It became my refuge. It held my grief when I didn’t quite know how to. Somehow, it brought me comfort in a way words never could, reminding me that love doesn’t end, it just changes form.

3. “Peace Be Still” – Pompi
Ohhh, this one. This is the song whose chorus I sang on the day Isaiah Katumwa told me I had a nice voice. That moment is still surreal to me, by the way. Every time I hear it, I’m transported back to that exact feeling—equal parts disbelief, pride, and quiet joy.

4. “Love on Top” – Beyoncé
This song takes me straight to a moment with my dad. There was a time when Dad and I attempted to out-sing Beyoncé. Obviously, we failed, spectacularly. But it was hilarious, loud, and full of laughter. To this day, we both love this song, and it still carries that light, happy memory with it.

5. “Baby” – Justin Bieber
I’m going to catch a lot of flack for this one, I know, but hear me out. There’s a really awesome reason why it’s here. Back when Justin Bieber was just starting out, my baby sister was one of the “unfortunate?” victims of full-blown Bieber Fever. This song became our weapon of choice to tease her mercilessly. Over time, and against my better judgment, I grew to like it.

So yep, that’s all I can think of for now.

Week one is officially down, and honestly? Like woooooow.
So, onwards and forwards.

Have a good night, beautiful people.

Mables 💛
