Growing Pains

An Alien To The Status Quo

Day 11: 10 Favorite foods.

This challenge has been good for me because I’ve been able to write everyday which is an amazing feat in itself and secondly, it has turned my blog into a travel, fashion and now food blog! I can’t wait to explore the other places it will lead me to.

So, my cue card says day 11 is all about my ten favorite foods, let’s dig in..

1. Oprah said it best for me.

I heart bread! I see a lot of people diss bread and my heart breaks, what did bread ever do to you?! The smell of freshly baked bread…..that’s just, that’s my jam. I did learn how to bake bread. My first try was not so successful, but as Winston Churchill said, “Never, ever ever ever, ever give up!”
I didn’t give up and my third attempt produced perfect bread which I ate immediately and forgot to instagram it (as proof, I mean, it’s the generation we live in after all) because I. Love. Bread.

2. This is a staple for all bachelors and single ladies too! It’s found only in Uganda. And it’s a food named after a very expensive watch. The kind that would make your man love you forever, I think. Don’t take my word though, I’m not qualified to give relationship advice. I’m talking about the one, the only, ROLEX! (and the crowds go wild with confetti and vuvuzelas!)

This delicacy was originally meant for university students but the phenomenon spread to the point that we had a Rolex Festival last year and CNN and the BBC mentioned it! We are now known as the country of the edible Rolex and grasshoppers, and a host of other bad things but still, yay! Don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself.

3. Rice and chicken, because its rice and chicken! Need I say more?

4. Raw Mangoes. This has led a lot of my friends to believe I’m perpetually pregnant. Just sprinkle a little salt on the peeled mangoes like salt bae….or a little chilli! Seasoning sorted.

5. I have a special relationship with red velvet cake. I haven’t learnt how to make it yet though. Its on the list.

6. Posho and Beans.. A lot of the people who studied in Ugandan boarding schools have stories of this food. I have horror stories that include posho that’s not posho but really hard porridge and beans with weevils…but when done right, it can be, out of this world.

7. Anyone who knows me will tell you how much I love chapatti. So the food commonly known as kyikomando can’t miss out on this list. This is a mixture of chapatti and beans. Just as simple as that.

8. I’m from the Eastern part of this pearl of Africa. A land that flows with malwa and kalo, so obviously our staple food can’t miss out. That is atap/kalo (millet flour) and eboo (greens in groundnut paste). Its just……the perfect taste of home.

9. PORK! I don’t think this needs an elaboration.

10. Last, but certainly not least, ice cream! Because its ice cream, duh! I loved it so much, I put on a ring on it…..no, not that……I learnt how to make it without an ice cream machine. Anyone who wants to learn how to…..just search on YouTube.
